Dear Syria

I'd like to apologize on behalf of my country, America, the disheveled fighting hobo baby.

Not all of us want to come to your crib and tear it up. In fact most of us have no idea what's going on and we're waiting to see what happens next just like you are. It's kind a weird situation you know? This little thing called democracy we pretend to have while we move once again towards unilateral invasion.

I'm really sorry about that.

I am over here, facepalming, thinking quietly to myself; "not again."

But hey you never know, you could end up pretending you have democracy too. Then we could pretend together.

Sincerely, America

Dear Attorney General Holder,

Original Letter

"Marijuana is illegal under Federal law and should remain that way. While we certainly understand that discretion plays a role in decisions to prosecute individual cases, the failure of the Department of Justice to challenge state policies that clearly contradict Federal law is both unacceptable and unprecedented. The failure of the Federal government to act in this matter is an open invitation to other states to legalize marijuana in defiance of federal law."

I like my version better:

Marijuana is illegal under Federal law and should remain that way because that's how I get paid. While we certainly understand that discretion plays a role in decisions to prosecute individual cases, the failure on the DOJ to challenge state policies that clearly contradict Federal law is both healthy and progressive. The failure of the Federal government to act in this matter is an open invitation to other states to legalize marijuana in defiance of my steady paycheck.

The question hasn't been whether or not the Department of Justice has failed in this matter, it's been a matter of how much the Department of Justice has failed.

I understand that people don't like to have their rugs taken out from underneath them- especially considering this whole austerity thing that seems to have a vice-grip on livelihoods and common sense, but at what point do you sit someone down and tell them that everything they have been doing for 40 years has been wrong.

I would imagine it would be pretty brutal.  I'd imagine people might feel threatened, and stupid. Those individuals who perhaps are feeling threatened and stupid, well I'd imagine their pockets are getting lighter. I'd imagine they might not like that very much. They might want to try and stick together, in fear of their livelihoods being taken away by someone higher on the authoritarian latter.  They might want to write an angry letter.

The police departments arrest people, the arrested people get their livelihoods taken away for a plant.

But lets be honest here. It's never been about taking away people's livelihoods for a plant.  It's always been about profits...  If America has the highest prison population in the world, and the majority of those inmates are non-violent cannabis "offenders", then arresting non-violent cannabis offenders has given America the highest prison population in the world.

Taxpayers paid the police departments to arrest people with plants. Taxpayers paid the prisons to cage people with plants. As it turns out though, we don't feel like paying for that anymore, and the DOJ finally fucking agrees

So suck it.
